Having supported the Bar for nearly a decade, Louise Crush of Westgate lifts the lid on what ‘financial planning’ for barristers really entails
Who we are Westgate is a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place. This provides our clients with the security and backing of one of the UK’s largest wealth management firms looking after over £179 billion of client’s funds, as well as access to its distinct Investment Management Approach and the opportunity to utilise St. James’s Place fund managers.
Westgate is a family-run practice, comprised of a number of advisers alongside administrative support staff. We also have a network of over 2,000 technical advisers across St. James’s Place, meaning that no circumstance is too difficult to overcome.
Westgate is a long-standing Bar Council Service Partner and specialises in advising members of the Bar. This relationship began when I joined Westgate.
Having been called to the Bar myself, I have a real understanding of the profession. This also uniquely positions Westgate to help a community with often complex financial circumstances. While my own journey led me away from practising, I feel extremely privileged to remain immersed in the sector.
Westgate provides a holistic service addressing all areas of financial planning – and across family generations – including financial protection, investments, pensions and inheritance tax planning.
Although the term ‘wealth management’ can be off-putting to some, we work with barristers at all stages of their careers and with varying levels of wealth. Typically, the earlier you start working with an adviser, the easier it is to formulate a plan to reach your financial goals. We provide educational resources for pupils on the essentials to consider when first on their feet and for new tenants when establishing a practice. More broadly, we have an open-door policy – if you have a question or concern at any time, or want to review the plans you have in place, contact us. We are here to help.
Westgate is based in Winchester and has a national client base. We offer a bespoke service and, with an understanding of the demands of a barrister’s career, we accommodate our clients accordingly – whether this means meetings via Zoom, at chambers or at home, and during the day, evening or weekend. We follow a three-stage process with our clients:
Our practice is founded on the belief that good financial advice changes lives. We have seen instances where advice taken has proven this, as well as instances where an absence of financial advice has been detrimental to an individual and their family. Westgate wants to provide a point of contact for barristers, to take away the stress that money (and the planning considerations around it) can create, while ensuring that your critical needs are identified and addressed. We think of ourselves as financial guardians of our clients – as you navigate your career and all that it entails, we make sure you have the best financial advice in place alongside you, along with the total peace of mind this brings.
