A woman cut out of her mother’s will, should receive a third of the estate, the Court of Appeal has ruled. Heather Ilott went to court after her mother, Melita Jackson, left her £486,000 estate to animal charities. The pair had become estranged after Ilott left home aged 17 to live with her boyfriend. The court awarded the daughter £164,000 on the grounds that she had not been given “reasonable financial provision” in her mother’s will. The ruling could significantly weaken people’s rights to determine who inherits from them.
