The Legal Aid Practitioners Group have unveiled their shortlist for the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards 2010 (“the LALYs”).
Rabinder Singh QC, of Matrix Chambers, Mark Henderson, of Doughty Street, and Stephen Cottle, of Garden Court Chambers, are the finalists for the Legal Aid Barrister Award, sponsored by the Bar Council.
Alison Pickup, of Doughty Street, Adam Straw, of Tooks Chambers, and Felicity Thomas, of Westgate Chambers are the finalists for the Young Legal Aid Barrister Award, which is sponsored by Irwin Mitchell.
Just for Kids Law/Lawrence & Co, a unique partnership between a charity and a law firm which gives legal and other advice to young people in trouble, is a finalist in the Legal Aid Firm/ Not-for-profit Agency Award (which is sponsored by Matrix Chambers), as are Cambridge House Law Centre, Rugby and Nuneaton CAB, and Pierce Glynn Solicitors.
The winners, due to be announced at a ceremony in central London on 26 May, will be presented with their awards by Cherie Booth QC.
The judges include Doreen Lawrence of the Stephen Lawrence Trust, legal journalist Joshua Rozenberg and Mr Justice McFarlane from the Family Division.
