THE Bar Council has played a central role at the International Bar Association’s Annual Conference, which took place in Vancouver, Canada, last month. The IBA Annual Conference brings together more than 4,000 practitioners and Bar leaders and officials from all over the world.
The Chairman of the Bar, Nicholas Green QC, spoke at a showcase session on Legal Aid, during which he heralded the importance of a properly funded legal aid system to the effective functioning of a democratic society. The Bar Council also held a networking reception for around 300 lawyers.
Nicholas Green QC said:
“We were delighted, once again, to have the opportunity to join colleagues from all around the world to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the profession. It is an important aspect of the Bar’s international business development activity. However, it also gives us the opportunity to discuss the important principles, such as a suitable level of legal aid, which underpin the justice system. Our presence at IBA provided us with an excellent opportunity to influence the timely debates on the regulation and future of the profession, which we recognise the importance of addressing now.”
